New biopharma center at nanotech complex to be training hub for college students

ALBANY – The Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences is working to make Albany a biopharma hub. They cut the ribbon to a new training and education center Tuesday. It is the first of its kind in the state and the first in the nation at a pharmacy college.

From cancer treatments to monoclonal antibodies and vaccines, biopharma is having a big impact.

That’s exactly why three years ago, Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences President Dr. Greg Dewey decided to create the Center for Biopharmaceutical Education and Training.

"These are very sophisticated drugs, they are very expensive to make, they are very difficult to make," said Dewey.

Through a business partnership with New York Creates, the college’s Stack Family Center for Biopharmaceutical Education and training was given a home at the Albany Nanotech Complex.

One of its main purposes is to create a skilled workforce for a growing industry, training many of its young students to become biopharmacists.

"This is an industry that is really in sore in need of talent, and so they are really, really receptive to what we’re doing," said Dewey.

However, the training isn’t just for students at the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
