Blueprint to reform NY prisons calls for end to lengthy solitary confinement
The Justice Policy Institute has released a policy blueprint to reform New York’s Prison System.
That blueprint, titled “A Moment of Reckoning”, was outlined in a virtual press conference on Thursday.
The blueprint calls for an end to prolonged solitary confinement, a pathway for release for aging inmates, and accountability for abusive prison staff.
State lawmakers and advocates joined the Justice Policy Institute for this event.
A former inmate also spoke, who said he spoke to inmates and their family members, and that he received a list of demands in an effort to ensure the safety of both correction officers and inmates.
This blueprint is in response to the 22-day unsanctioned strike that took place at prisons across the state, which ended earlier this week.
