Mother, daughter killed after being hit by car in East Greenbush

EAST GREENBUSH – A mother and daughter were hit by a car when crossing Columbia Turnpike in East Greenbush. Sadly, both of them died.

It’s unquestionably a horrendous, heart-wrenching tragedy for many people. However, police say there’s no one to blame for what happened.

Everything happened after dark. It was roughly 8:30 on Tuesday night when 50-year-old Roberta Kenney and her 88-year-old mother Rita Buhl walked out of their house and crossed the road, heading for Price Chopper.

The tragedy occurred after the mother and daughter picked up their groceries and were heading home. At exactly the same moment, a 23-year-old Troy man was coming home from work, westbound on the Columbia Turnpike when he slammed into the women. Police say that man has been very cooperative and wasn’t impaired by alcohol or drugs.

There are streetlights at the intersection of Columbia Turnpike and Phillips Road, although neighbors says it’s still pretty dark there at night.

Detective Guadagnino says telling an 18-year-old boy that his mother and grandmother were killed was perhaps the most difficult death notification he’s had to make in an 18-year police career.

At this point, police aren’t sure if the women were in the crosswalk. There are no video cameras at this intersection. Guadagnino says this intersection does has a history of crashes, but obviously nothing of the magnitude of this tragedy.
