Albany Med names Dr. KMarie King new chair of surgery

Albany Med has a new leader of surgery.

The hospital announced Tuesday that Dr. KMarie King will become the new chair of the hospital’s Department of Surgery starting on September 1.

Dr. King will be the first Black female chair of surgery at an academic health science center in the country.

Dr. King is currently a professor of surgery at Morehouse School of Medicine.

While an undergraduate at St. Joseph’s College, Dr. King left to serve in the U.S. Army during Operation Desert Storm. She returned to finish her degree in biology.

Dr. King also has degrees from Washington University in St. Louis, the University of Pittsburgh, the Mayo Clinic, and Brandeis University

Dr. King is a researcher into liver and pancreatic cancers and is a member of a number of different surgical organizations.
