Former MyPayrollHR CEO Michael Mann was sentenced to 12 years in federal prison on Wednesday, and eight to 24 years behind bars by the state.

Mann previously admitted to stealing millions of dollars in an elaborate nationwide swindle going back a decade, that involved banks, financial institutions and individual payroll accounts.

The Clifton Park-based company’s shutdown left more than 1,000 small businesses across the country scrambling to pay employees.

Mann apologized in court on Wednesday, and says he wants to use his story to help people learn from his mistakes.

Mann owes more than $100 million in restitution. He must report to prison September 21.

His lawyer is requesting that he be sent to a prison near North Carolina, where his wife is currently living.
