NIVERVILLE – Fire has destroyed a century-old stone mansion in Columbia County. It’s believed a lightning strike started it.

The fire broke out at a home located at 233 Route 28B in Niverville on Thursday afternoon.

The 5,000 square foot home was built in 1923, and sits on a mountaintop overlooking what used to be Electric Park.

Fifteen fire companies and 60 to 70 firefighters worked tirelessly through the afternoon to put the fire out.

One of the firefighters was treated for heat exhaustion.

Everyone inside the home was able to get out safely, but their belongings are destroyed.
