April is "Donate Life Awareness Month" and New York State DMV is encouraging New Yorkers to register as organ donors.

DMV says the need for organ donors is tremendous. Every 10 minutes, another person is added to the national transplant waiting list. Nearly 9,000 New Yorkers are in need of a new organ right now.

"We only have about 45% of our population enrolled and the average, the national average is 63%," said Aisha Tator. "So we still have a long way to go."

You can also show your support for organ donation with a "Donate Life" custom license plate. When you get one of those, $20 of your annual fee supports the "Life Pass It On Trust Fund," which promotes and educates New Yorkers about organ donation.
