The United States Food and Drug Administration has expanded approval of the drug Remdesivir to treat patients as young one month and weighing about seven pounds.

This is the first COVID-19 treatment approved for children younger than 12.

To be eligible for treatment, the FDA says children must be hospitalized or have mild to moderate COVID-19, but are at high risk for progressing to severe COVID.

The drug is given as an injection.
