Greene County welfare check ends with chase, arrest

A welfare check in Greene County leads to a chase.

It happened Sunday in the town of Athens.

Sheriff’s deputies conducted the check, but say Lawrence Smith Jr. was giving them inconsistent information when they asked him to identify himself. That’s when police say Smith took off. He was taken into custody a short time later.

Investigators say Smith was wanted for jumping parole, and that they recovered a gun and crack cocaine.

Smith was sent to the Greene County Jail.
