Hillsdale man charged in chase and crash near Albany Airport

Colonie police arrested the person who they say led them on a wild chase through the airport.

Police say 27-year-old Tyler Meltz of Hillsdale tried to steal jewelry from Macy’s in Colonie, and then took off in a stolen car.

Police say he led them on a chase, before crashing through a fence at Albany International Airport.

Police say after Meltz crashed through the fence, he drove onto the runway and went through the other side.

They say he took off after leaving the car behind in a parking lot. He was caught a short time later.

The airport says the runway was not open for flights taking off or landing at that time.

Meltz is in the Albany County Jail.
