Hochul highlights priorities for NY

In her first formal address as governor, Kathy Hochul highlighted her priorities for New York. At the top of the list, battling the Delta COVID-19 variant, getting children back to school safely, and creating more accountability.

In terms of schools, Gov. Hochul said vaccines need to be required for all school personnel with the option to test out weekly. Hochul said New York’s launching a back to school testing program to make testing for students and staff convenient. She also said she’s directed the New York State Department of Health to put out a universal mask mandate in schools.

Hochul said she’s also focused on increasing vaccination rates in New York.

"With the FDA’s full approval of the Pfizer vaccine yesterday, New Yorkers can expect more vaccine requirements," she said.

Hochul says she’s also focused on the rollout of booster shots in New York.

Getting out COVID-19 assistance is another focus during Hochul’s first days in office.

"I want the money out now with no more excuses or delays," Hochul stressed.

She said they’re launching a new campaign to reach more New Yorkers on rent relief. Hochul said she’s also hiring more staff to process applications immediately.

"New Yorkers should know if you apply and qualify for this money you will be protected from eviction for a solid year," Hochul explained.

Finally, Hochul said she’s focused on creating a change in culture. Hochul is directing a complete overhaul of state government policies on sexual harassment and ethics.

Hochul said training will be required to be done live instead of allowing people to click through a training. She also added that she would sign an executive order requiring ethics training for every state employee, something that’s not currently required across the board.
