Albany County Executive Dan McCoy is shining a light on a victim of domestic violence that you may not think of – the family pet.

McCoy is teaming up with the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society.

If you are in an abusive situation and need to leave, you can bring your pet to the shelter in Menands.

County employees also donated supplies to the shelter to help those animals.

McCoy says we have to protect the animals from the abuse just as much as partners and children.

"That person unfortunately sees the love and affection that their partner has, and they take it out on the pet," said McCoy.

Owners can pick up their pets from the animal shelter once their living situation improves.
