BROOKSVILLE, Ky. – A Kentucky child battling cancer is getting a lot of love from his classmates. They raised thousands of dollars for him and his family, one penny at a time.
Raylen Poe, who is in 3rd grade, is undergoing chemo. To support him and his family, a teacher at his school helped organize a fundraiser called “Penny Wars.”
Of course one penny isn’t worth so much, but when hundreds of thousands of pennies are collected, you have a pretty great fundraiser on your hands. In fact, Kaylen’s classmates collected more than $7,800 worth of pennies, other coins and cash. That, plus T-shirt sales and a donor check, added up to $10,000 raised.
The money raised was given to the family earlier this month.
