The Massachusetts secretary of state is calling for an investigation into the sudden surge in prices for gas and heating oil.

William Galvin asked the state Attorney General’s Office to investigate whether state consumer protection laws are being violated. Healy’s office says it has received several complaints about possible price gouging, and it is monitoring the situation.

The head of the Gas Industry Trade Group denied there was price gouging going on.
