COHOES – A new mural in the city of Cohoes commemorates the men and women who founded the Spindle City.

The mural unveiling on Tuesday was the culmination of three years of work and public input. It shows men and women working in the mills.

Mayor Bill Keeler says their labor and the revenue it generated makes up the foundation of the city.

"City Hall, the [Cohoes] Music Hall, our public library, and many houses of worship, including Silliman Church – which once stood on this very site, all owed their very existence to the working people whose blood and sweat went into building a better life and a community we all enjoy," said Keeler.

The mural’s painter says he wanted the work to represent the strength of the working people of Cohoes.
