TROY – After years of planning and investment, the South Troy Pool opened in 2020, but with strictly limited capacity due to the pandemic.

There was great excitement Tuesday when kids got the green light to dive in on a hot and humid Tuesday afternoon.

It was hot, it was humid, and storm clouds in the distance seemed of no concern when the pool opened at 1 p.m.

Last year, the pool’s first since a host of upgrades, saw tight capacity restrictions. This year, they’re starting at 50%, about 120 guests.

At least one family member has to be a city resident. The mayor expects they’ll be back to full capacity quickly.

The usual nominal fee for swimmers has been waived this season. If you qualify, you can even get lunch for free thanks to the Boys & Girls Club.

"We do it for 17 and under. That’s who we offer it to first, the children," explained Devanute Thornton, BCGC Assistant Pool Supervisor

"Typically we have a surplus of meals, so after we make sure the children eat, we then offer it up to anybody else who would like to eat."
