Across New York, about 50,000 drivers illegally pass school buses each school day. Police will be stepping up patrols Thursday to crack down on those drivers.

It’s "Operation Safe Stop Day."

Police will be on the lookout for drivers who pass school buses that are stopped with their red lights flashing.

The fines for passing a stopped school bus range from a minimum of $250 for a first violation to a maximum of $1,000 for three violations in three years.
