NewsChannel 13 salutes Navy Specialist Helen Brownell of Clifton, New Jersey, with family in the southern Adirondacks.

She enlisted at age 18, joining her four brothers who were already serving.

She worked at a naval yard in Philadelphia.

After the military, she had a long career in cosmetology.

She passed away in December 2021, weeks before her 99th birthday.
