NewsChannel 13 salutes Richard Freed Sr. of Providence, R.I. and Granville, N.Y.

The husband and father of eight served in the Merchant Marines.

That includes time in the Pacific Theater and European Theater.

He survived both the invasion of Normandy in 1944 and the sinking of his ship.

He passed away in 2018.
