Albany man faces felony gun charges

Albany County Sheriff’s deputies stopped a vehicle driven by Iziah U. Smith, 29, just after 5:30 p.m. in the area of Morton Avenue and Broad Street for multiple traffic violations, police said. Smith allegedly possessed a loaded Glock .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun. He also had a fraudulent New York state inspection sticker, police said.

An Albany man is facing felony weapons charges after a traffic stop on Monday.

Albany County Sheriff’s deputies stopped a vehicle driven by Iziah U. Smith, 29, just after 5:30 p.m. in the area of Morton Avenue and Broad Street for multiple traffic violations, police said. Smith allegedly possessed a loaded Glock .40-caliber semiautomatic handgun. He also had a fraudulent New York state inspection sticker, police said.

When police tried to arrest him, Smith is accused of physically fighting with deputies and attempting to run away. He was subsequently found and arrested.

Smith is prohibited from owning any firearms as a convicted felon.

He was charged with three counts of criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a forged instrument, obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest and multiple traffic violations.

Smith was held for arraignment in Albany County Criminal Court on Tuesday.
