Amsterdam, Catskill to get new police chiefs
The city of Amsterdam will have a new police chief.
Lt. Joseph Spencer will be sworn in at City Hall on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 4 p.m., pending council approval.
Spencer succeeds John Thomas as head of the Amsterdam Police Department.

Mayor Michael Cinquanti said they had two outstanding finalists for the position.
Cinquanti said Spencer is best prepared to meet the challenges facing the department.
“These include the use of more technology, data analytics, enhanced recruiting practices, and strong communications skills to satisfy the ever-increasing demand for greater departmental outreach and transparency,” he said.
In Catskill, Lt. Daniel Waer will be taking over as chief on Nov. 25.
Chief Ronald Frascello retired from the position.
