Catskill, N.Y. (WNYT) — Seven members of the Catskill Fire Department just got back Monday night after heading down Saturday for three days of hard work.

They travelled down to fight the Jennings Creek Fire in Orange County with their Engine 3-13.

“We saw smoke rolling over the mountain pretty good down there,” said Second Lieutenant Angelina Colon. “I guess it jumped the fire line, so we were on structural protection. We went down to Edgemere. We stood by a house. We had two houses that we were protecting and we saw the fire and smoke getting closer and closer.”

“We were behind houses, wetting down everything behind the houses and the houses at points because the fire was creeping down near us Saturday night,” said Lieutenant Addison Allen. “Sunday we were covering hot spots.”

It was physically demanding work.

“It was really just the terrain,” said firefighter Ben Swart. “It was very steep where we were behind the houses so navigating that and being safe while doing so was the biggest thing, but we all came out with no injuries and we’re real happy about that.”

“A lot of it was just making sure the fire wouldn’t get past the fire line they had set up, so they set up some hose to stop the fire from advancing and we had two hoses off our main truck where if the fire got any closer we were to just put it out entirely,” said firefighter Nicholas Teslenko.

At one point, our interview was interrupted by a loud siren– a fire call. They just got back the night before, but no rest for the weary. These volunteers headed out to another call.

The young crew here in Catskill were met with great gratitude in Orange County.

“Hundreds and hundreds of people living in the town came out and supported us, gave us food every single morning, lunch, dinner, made sure we were all set throughout the day,” said Lt. Colon. “It was absolutely beautiful.”
