Equine sanctuary seeks strict enforcement of new horse slaughter ban

Equine sanctuary wants horse slaughter ban enforced

Equine Advocates in Valatie wants strict enforcement of a ban on horse slaughter and transporting horses for slaughter.

A local equine sanctuary is calling for strict enforcement of a law that goes into effect Thursday.

The law bans horse slaughter in New York state and makes it illegal to transport horses headed for death from and through New York.

Equine Advocates in Valatie is home to 85 rescued horses, ponies, donkeys and mules. Its founder, Susan Wagner, has been at the forefront of a nearly 20-year push to get this law passed. However, she said it won’t mean anything if it is not enforced.

Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the bill into law this past December.
