Albany County broke ground on a new training center for first responders this week.

The Dawson “Red” Bonitz Town of Guilderland Municipal Fire Training Center will allow volunteer firefighters to sharpen their skills, learn the latest techniques, and prepare themselves to overcome any obstacle.

Bonitz was one of the founding members of the Westmere Fire Department.

The new center replaces a 50-year-old facility.

This new facility will include three “structures” to practice fighting fires on, including a four-story building.

The new facility is expected to help train thousands of firefighters.
