Zebra mussel DNA has been found in Pontoosuc Lake in Pittsfield.

A zebra mussel is an invasive freshwater mollusk that present a variety of ecological, recreational, and economic concerns.

Zebra mussels in 2009 were detected in Laurel Lake in Berkshire County and its outflow into the Housatonic River.

The city of Pittsfield has actively worked to prevent the spread since then.
