New York state has reached a huge solar power milestone.

Six gigawatts of distributed solar have been installed across the state. That’s enough to power nearly 1,000 homes.

The exciting news was announced in New Scotland on Thursday. It’s a goal New York achieved a year ahead of schedule, according to Gov. Kathy Hochul.

New York Energy Research and Development Authority CEO Doreen Harris made the announcement.
The solar milestone benefits more than just the environment, according to Harris.

“This milestone means that we are literally powering over one million New York state homes with distributed solar,” said Harris. “So this is not only a huge benefit to consumers, a huge benefit to our environment but also a huge benefit to our economy.”

Gov. Hochul said she set the goal of reaching 10 gigawatts of distributed solar by 2030. New York is ahead of schedule for reaching that goal, she said.
