Report: More New Yorkers struggling with food insecurity

Food insecurity is a growing problem in New York state. That’s according to a new report from State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli’s office.

New data shows more families struggled after the pandemic.
According to the Department of Agriculture, about one household out of every nine wasn’t able to buy enough food between 2020 and 2022. The national average during that time was one in 10. Those numbers only went up last year, but early data from this year shows a slight drop.

Many of the food programs in place during the pandemic have gone away, said DiNapoli. He’s calling on the federal government to expand eligibility for those programs so more people can use them.
