Street fight in Troy turns violent in altercations with police
TROY, N.Y. (WNYT) – A street fight that broke out in Troy Friday morning turned violent after altercations with police. Troy Police say they responded to a call of a street fight on 8th Street near the intersection of Hoosick Street just after 3 a.m. Friday.
In video obtained by NewsChannel 13 from neighbors, one can see the moment an officer appears to punch a man.
Casandra Wagar lives right next to where the fight happened, and she says the use of force was not justified.
“They jumped on his back, flipped him over like a doll, through the knee and in the back of his shoulder, and he was unresponsive,” said Wagar.
In a statement, Troy Police said that “after the male grabbed and pulled the arresting officer’s arm in a two-handed hold, the officer resorted to additional defensive tactics.”
Wagar said she is a close friend of the man who appeared to be punched, David Gonzalez. She said that Gonzalez has a disability which makes it hard for him to stand up.
“He went to grab at the officer’s arms, it was not for him to cause anyone harm, and it was because he lost his balance due to the arm push,” said Wagar.
NewsChannel 13 has reached out to Troy Police to ask what “additional defensive tactics” means and have not yet heard back.
