Domestic violence workers training campground employees to spot victims

Many state campgrounds open this weekend, and the state is hoping to make sure this is the safest year yet in terms of domestic violence.

Between 2016 and 2018, intimate partner violence victimizations in the United States increased 42%.

During the pandemic, calls to the state Domestic Violence Hotline went up 76%.

According to the Bureau of Justice, every 68 seconds, an American is assaulted.

The State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence is training more than 4,000 DEC and State Parks employees who work at state campgrounds. Millions of people use these state lands every year.

While we think of domestic violence as occurring mostly in the home, it can happen anywhere, even while on vacation or a camping trip.

This training allows people who wouldn’t normally be trained for this kind of situation to identify survivors and let them know help is available.
