April is "Distracted Driving Awareness Month."

The state National Safety Council estimates our roads are the most dangerous they’ve been in years.

Throughout the month of April, you will see messages, signs and billboards, reminding you to put your phone down and be safe while you drive.

In 2001, New York issued the first statewide handheld cell phone ban in the country.

Driver inattention or distraction factors for 20% of all crashes across the state.

NewsChannel 13’s Subrina Dhammi was challenged with navigating the emergency vehicle operator course – what police officers go through – while texting behind the wheel.

The importance of this experience was to highlight the dangers of being distracted while driving, now more than ever.
