The air quality in Albany is not back to normal, but began to significantly improve on Thursday.

By late Thursday evening, the air quality had been upgraded to “Moderate.”

This had been the worst air quality New York state has had since measuring began in the 1960s, Gov. Hochul said Thursday, as she held a briefing at UAlbany.

New York City has seen some of the worst of it, Hochul noted.

New York state also has plans to send up firefighters to remote areas Canada where the wildfires causing this smoke are burning. That includes a team who will be leaving from Saratoga on Friday. Firefighters from New Hampshire and Maine are also going, said Hochul.

Hochul also said she wanted to assure New Yorkers that this is nothing like the pandemic, and expected to be a short-term problem.

“I want people to know this is a very different circumstance,” she said.
