Albany Common Council pushes state lawmakers for more eviction protections
The Albany Common Council is pushing for more protections for renters in the city.
They’re calling on state lawmakers to pass Good Cause Eviction statewide, which would protect tenants from unreasonable rate hikes and unfair evictions.
The lack of tenant protections has had serious consequences in the city, said council members. More than half of the people living in Albany are renters.
This latest push comes as lawmakers are considering Good Cause Eviction as part of a housing deal in the New York State Budget.
Albany was the first city in New York to pass local Good Cause Evictions, which the New York State Supreme Court struck down last year, ruling that only the state could pass the measure.
The case has now moved up to the court of appeals.
