Albany County Democrats decide to endorse no one for district attorney

The Albany County Democratic Committee voted Wednesday night not to endorse anyone for district attorney.

The Albany County Democratic Committee voted Wednesday night not to endorse anyone for district attorney.

At least six people are vying for the spot, including four who were interviewed by the committee – 20-year incumbent David Soares, defense attorney Lee Kindlon, Assemblyman Phil Steck, and Soares’ predecessor Paul Clyne.

The committee said the decision is because each candidate was highly qualified and their resumes sound.

Soares had been on a path to cruise to victory for another term, but came under fire for giving himself a $22,000 boost in pay with grant money that was meant to hire and retain staff. Soares agreed to give the money back. However, he has refused to step down.

Rick Hartunian, former U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of New York, and State Police Division Counsel John Czajka are also in the race.
