The runway to the Capital Region is in the middle of a first-class upgrade.

A massive construction project is underway at the Albany International Airport. It will last into 2025.

Right now, crews are busy demolishing portions of the building and constructing the foundation for a brand-new addition to the terminal which will connect the north parking garage to the existing terminal.

The addition will expand the TSA screening area, add amenities like a play area for children and make the airport more eco-friendly — welcome additions as the area draws large events with national audiences.

“The airport is a welcome mat to the Capital Region, the gateway, if you will, to the Capital Region,” said Director of Communications Steve Smith. “Having a more modernized, improved airport, is going to not only enhance the passenger experience, but it’s going to make our area more attractable to people who are in the business community, and those who travel frequently to other areas in the Capital Region.” 

The project costs $100 million. The airport received $60 million as part of the Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competitions. Nine airports across the state are receiving $230 million from the state to modernize.

The other $40 million comes from federal funding, including money from the federal infrastructure bill.

Passengers will notice some changes to how the road near the terminal is configured as construction continues.

“For the most part, though there’s been no disruption to what people are coming to the airport for, to get on an airplane and go to their destination. But getting to the parking garage, getting to the main terminal as a result of the construction does require a little bit of shuffling,” Smith said.
