Albany man gets 50 years to life in 2022 Albany murder

Albany man gets 50 years to life in 2022 Albany murder in the death of an 18-year-old man. Also, tried to kill another person.

An Albany man was sentenced on Friday to 50 years to life in prison for killing an 18-year-old man back in 2022.

Brian Moses was convicted on Feb. 1 of murder, attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon. Moses shot and killed William Sanders on Sept. 30, 2022 in the area of Hamilton Street. He also tried to kill another person on July 7, 2022, in the 800 block of Madison Avenue, the Albany County District Attorney’s Office said.

“It’s hard to describe exactly how senseless this defendant’s actions were,” Assistant District Attorney Jennifer McCanney said in a statement. “He killed William Sanders, a person he didn’t even know, for no reason whatsoever, and has shown zero remorse,” she said in a statement. “If it weren’t for this defendant’s gun jamming, there would be a second homicide victim here in Billy Rodriguez, who he shot once, and tried to shoot several more times. Given those factors, the only appropriate sentence is the maximum.”

Judge Roger McDonough also called it another “seemingly endless cavalcade of cases before this court of young black men shooting other young black men for no sensical, logical reason.”

He added that Moses was seen on surveillance footage walking up to a group of young Black men in a park having fun with each other. They weren’t threatening or intimidating anyone.

“Then you have, quite frankly, the audacity to stand up and say you have sympathy, or you want to express condolences for the family of the victims? That rings hollow,” he said in a statement.
