Albany Police release body cam video of officer-involved shooting
Albany Police have released body camera video after an Albany police officer was injured, and a suspect was killed in a shootout just after midnight on Wednesday morning near North Main Avenue and Western Avenue.
The officer saw a car speeding in the area and briefly chased it. However, the officer ended the chase for safety reasons, Police Chief Eric Hawkins said.
He found the car a short time later, parked on the side of the road.
The suspect opened fire when the officer approached, police said. The officer was hit in the upper thigh area, Hawkins said.
Body cam and dash cam video shows the officer exited his car only to be ambushed by a man in his mid to late 20s, who opened fire on the officer.
The officer shot back at the suspect. The suspect and the officer were both taken to Albany Medical Center. The suspect was pronounced dead at 1:13 a.m.
More then 10 shell casing were recovered at the scene.
The officer is conscious and alert in the hospital, investigators said.
Police have not released the names of the suspect or the officer yet. However, they plan to do so later Wednesday or on Thursday, investigators said.
An autopsy was done on the suspect, Hawkins said. The results have not been released.
Meanwhile, Sheehan told NewsChannel 13 she spoke with the injured officer before he went in for surgery. The officer displayed a positive attitude, she said, telling her, “This is what I signed up to do,” which she called, “remarkable, amazing, and admirable.”
The shooting will be investigated by the attorney general, the Office of Professional Standards, and by the Civilian Police Review Board.
