Thursday was the first day of school for some students in the Capital Region.

NewsChannel 13 was at North Albany Middle School Thursday morning, as kids lined up on the front steps.

This year, the district planned a staggered start, meaning half of the students returned Thursday, the other half will be in class Friday.

Everyone will return next week after Labor Day.

Nearly 8,000 students are in the Albany City School District, which operates 15 schools – 11 elementary, three middle, and one high school.
