Athens ex-bookkeeper accused of trying to steal money

A former bookkeeper for the town of Athens is accused of trying to steal money from the town.

Donald A. Pierro, 70, of Hillsdale, altered payroll records in order to benefit himself, according to the Greene County Sheriff’s Office.

The investigation began on March 18 after police received a complaint about possible theft. No money was taken because the transactions were stopped before being completed, Investigator Joel Rowell said.

Pierro faces felony charges of attempted grand larceny and falsifying business records, and a misdemeanor of official misconduct. He was arraigned in Athens Town Court and released on his own recognizance.

Pierro had worked for the town for about five years, police said.

Athens Town Supervisor Michael Pirrone did not return a message seeking comment.
