Bars, restaurants join forces to discourage drunk driving

Bars, restaurants join forces to discourage drunk driving.

A group of bar and restaurant owners are announcing a new initiative to fight against drunk driving before New Year’s Eve.

Todd Shapiro, owner of the War Room Tavern, and Lark Street Tavern owner Chris Pratt are forming a new organization with establishments called “Bars Against Drunk Driving,” or BADD.

They will be paying for taxi and Uber services for customers who have had too much to drink.

Shapiro also will be voluntarily using a breathalyzer behind the bar for customers.

According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, every day, about 37 people in the United States die in drunk driving crashes. That’s one person every 39 minutes.

A press conference will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the War Room Tavern on Eagle Street in Albany.

NewsChannel 13 will bring updates on this story on-air and online.
