As a country – are we free of our racial history? Best-selling author, Michelle Alexander says we’re not, because of mass incarceration.

It’s is a system which sees a disproportionate number of Blacks locked up over other groups.

According to PrisonPolicy.org, while Blacks make up 13% of the U.S. population, they make up 38% of the population in prison and jail.

Alexander spoke at the College of Saint Rose Tuesday evening.

Before her talk, NewsChannel 13 spoke with some of the students planning to attend.

Hear why they said it’s so important for young people to become familiar with the issue by watching the video of Elaine Houston’s story.
