Bill would remove tax penalties for sexual assault survivors

There’s a bipartisan bill introduced in the Senate that removes tax penalties on settlements for survivors of sexual assault.

New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is co-sponsoring the “Tax Fairness for Survivors” act. It removes taxes on settlements, awards, and judgments paid to survivors.

Payments for survivors of sexual harassment and assault are currently taxed, unless they can prove they received physical injuries.

Gillibrand called it unacceptable for survivors to pay taxes on compensation awarded to them.
