Railroad: Derailment caused by broken rail

A broken rail caused the train derailment in Rensselaer County earlier this month, a spokesperson for the company confirmed Friday.

Ten cars of a 94-car train car had left the tracks in Valley Falls on Feb. 7. Two of the cars ended up in the Hudson River, and spilled vegetable oil and plastic pellets.

The pellets were initially suctioned out of the railcar and skimmed from the immediate area via vacuum truck, the spokesperson said. Now tiered floating booms have been set up along the river to recover pellets.
