Catskill school board releases statement regarding controversy over principal, teacher’s suspension

The Catskill Board of Education issued a statement on Wednesday about an investigation into two staff members.

A group of concerned parents, students and former students delivered a petition with more than 2,000 signatures to the school board on Tuesday. They are seeking the return of Principal Junait Shah and music teacher Michelle Storrs, as well as the resignation of the superintendent.

The educators are currently on leave. The district has not commented on the reason, but those advocating for their return believe it is because of an incident in which a student put duct tape on her mouth after a joking remark made by Storrs to get students to stop talking during a rehearsal for an upcoming school play.

Another rally is being scheduled for Thursday at 5 p.m. at the superintendent’s office.

School officials have said they cannot comment on personnel matters.

On Wednesday, they released this statement:

Dear Members of the Community,

On behalf of the Board of Education, we are reaching out to address recent concerns that have arisen regarding our educational community. We understand that there is a need for transparency and accountability, and we are committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity throughout our schools.

Upon learning of recent allegations involving district employees, Superintendent Dan Wilson promptly initiated an investigation to thoroughly examine the matter. These procedures include gathering evidence, conducting interviews with relevant parties, and adhering to legal and ethical guidelines. Throughout the investigation, confidentiality is maintained to protect the privacy and rights of all individuals involved.

While we recognize the public’s interest and concern, it is paramount to safeguard the integrity of the investigation and the rights of those involved. Therefore, at this time, the Board of Education is unable to provide further comment on the specifics of the case.

Please rest assured that we take these matters seriously and remain steadfast in our commitment to providing a safe, fair and supportive learning environment for all students, faculty, and staff.

We appreciate the community’s understanding and support during this process. We encourage community members to continue engaging with us and welcome participation at Board meetings within the confines of the law, regulation, and School District policy.
