Gillis has only been with the sheriff’s office for two and a half years, but he says also being a volunteer firefighter helped him stay calm and know exactly what to do.

The call came in as a structure fire, Gillis said, but it was unclear at first if anyone was still inside or hurt.
Gillis says he found 11 pugs on the property. Sadly, two of them didn’t make it.
