Charges updated for ex-Olympian who admitted to child sex abuse

The former Olympian and longtime track coach in Berkshire County who admitted to molesting young boys has updated his guilty plea.

Conrad Mainwaring pleaded guilty to 11 counts last month, including indecent assault and battery of someone who is 14 years old. However, those charges did not exist in the 1970s when Mainwaring committed the crimes.

Berkshire County District Attorney Timothy Shugrue said his office has amended the sentence to include the correct charges.

Mainwaring will still serve up to 11 years in state prison.

The charge of indecent assault and battery of someone who is 14 years old was established in the 1980s.

“This case highlights the evolution of laws surrounding child abuse laws since the 1970s. These heinous crimes were not fully understood until more recently. However, the laws continue to be developed to better reflect these despicable crimes,” Shugrue said in a statement.

Mainwaring had admitted that he sexually abused nine boys while working as a camp counselor in the town of Becket back in the 1970s.
