Fire chief: Bug bomb may have caused fire

Fire chief: Bug bomb may have caused fire that damaged Schenectady house.

A fire that injured four Schenectady firefighters on Saturday may have been cause by a “bug bomb,” according to the chief.

Fire broke out at a home at the intersection of Turner Avenue and 9th Street. A neighbor called 911 after smelling heavy smoke.

The firefighters had non life-threatening injuries and were since released from the hospital.

Fire Chief Donald Mareno said they are not 100% sure of the cause, but said there is a “strong possibility” that the fire may have been sparked by the misuse of the bug bomb during fumigation of the structure.

“The lesson learned from this incident, and can be carried to many other activities, is the importance of following the manufacturer’s instructions and recommendations,” he said.
