Girl, 10, killed in Whitehall fire

A 10-year-old girl was killed in a Whitehall fire, early Wednesday morning.

A 10-year-old fourth-grader died Wednesday in an early morning fire, according to a letter posted on the Whitehall Central School District’s website from Superintendent Patrick Dee.

“It is with the deepest regret that I must share the following information,” Dee said. “It is important that we come together as a community to support our student body and staff as they cope with this terrible loss.”

Sources told NewsChannel 13’s Mark Mulholland the fire happened around 5 a.m. at 5 Maple Street and that there were reports of people possibly trapped.

Mental health counselors will be available throughout the week to support students, Dee said. He encouraged parents or guardians to contact the district if they feel their child needs extra support.

Meanwhile, the Red Cross is now helping 10 people affected by the fire.
