Crews battle house fire in Schenectady

The chief told NewsChannel 13 four firefighters were taken to the hospital with injuries.

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (WNYT) – Crews were fighting a fire at a home at the intersection of Turner Avenue and 9th Street Saturday night.

The Schenectady City Fire Chief Donald Mareno said four firefighters had to be taken to the hospital and are dealing with non-life threating injuries.

Mareno said that this has been a very challenging fire for them.

NewsChannel 13 spoke to the woman who called 911 who said she called at 8:43 p.m. Saturday after smelling heavy smoke. She said she lives right next door to the home that was on fire.

Heavy smoke was coming from the second floor and the attic. Multiple ambulances are on the scene.

John Mitchell lives around the corner from the home that was on fire and he said that thing got worse throughout the night.

“There was smoke, everything, and next thing I know firetrucks was coming in. Yeah, it definitely got worse. It was all up in the air. Smoke everything. And the next thing I know, firetrucks was coming in,” Mitchell said.

Flames were also seen at one point shooting through one corner of the home.

Firefighters were sawing open the wall to access the home from a ladder on the second floor.

National Grid crews were on the scene. Neighbors said they shut off power on the block.

Smoke from this fire could be seen in the sky from half a mile away.

The cause of this fire is currently unknown.
