Garbage – what we throw in the trash – is the fourth-largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in the state, the state Department of Environmental Conservation said.
The DEC is out with a new plan for dealing with solid waste. The plan will now go to a 60-day comment period.
The plan recommends actions to reduce the climate impact of solid waste.
It also provides direction for New York’s waste reduction, reuse, recycling, collection, transportation, and disposal investments, policies and practices over the next decade.
After reviewing public comments, DEC will make changes before adopting and publishing a final plan.
