Democrat Gary McCarthy reelected Schenectady mayor

Democrat Gary McCarthy was reelected Schenectady mayor on Tuesday evening.

He beat Republican Matt Nelligan, the Schenectady Republican Committee Chairman, and a former teacher, and Edward Varno, who was running on the Working Families party.

McCarthy became acting mayor in 2011 when then-Mayor Brian Stratton left to become director of the New York State Canal Corporation. He was elected as mayor later that year, and has served in the position ever since.
